What are bio-plastics and what are their advantages?
A bio-plastic is essentially a material made from vegetable starch resins rather than petroleum based resins. Unlike conventional plastics, bio-plastics are able to dissolve/biodegrade harmlessly into the environment within 2-5 years time when placed in a bacteria rich location like a landfill. When stored in a clean environment, away from soil, high moisture and direct sunlight, bio-plastics will hold their integrity and not degrade for much longer periods of time, allowing them to be kept and used in much the same way as conventional plastics can. Another advantage with bio-resins is that the raw materials used to make them are sustainable and can be regrown/regenerated easily, especially in a tropical place like Thailand. Furthermore, bio-plastics can also be recycled if required before going to compost. The production process is also much less polluting than the processes used to produce paper products, which often involves a lot of harmful chemicals that contribute to water pollution. This makes bio-plastic a more environmentally friendly option than both conventional plastic and paper.
